“Never, for the sake of peace and quiet, deny your own experience or convictions.”
Dag Hammarskjold
Swedish economist and former Secretary General of the United Nations

Investing can be a lonely journey if the only gauge of your research efforts from one day to the next is the share price of your portfolio of companies. Emotion and sentiment can push prices down further in the short term and portfolio level returns can be diminished on thin trade with little fundamental rhyme or reason.

Deep value, contrarian investing, when backed with conviction, has the potential to produce significant returns to the patient long-term investor as lonely as it may feel over short periods of time.  The key is to spend the time doing robust fundamental research so that truly mis-priced opportunities can be identified and held for as long as is necessary for the stock to be re-rated.

If you’ve done the research and have thoroughly tested your investment thesis none of this matters, as uncomfortable as it may feel from one day to the next.

Indeed, for the first half of the 2025 the flagship Collins St Value Fund produced relatively flat returns as long held positions remained out of favour with the market.  Those positions were maintained and we stayed true to our investment philosophy in the belief that ‘water would eventually find its level’ and the investment thesis would eventually play out.

And it did.

The August 2025 ASX reporting season saw our basket of ASX listed gold stocks rise along with a selection of other stocks that pushed the unit price to consecutive all-time highs in both September (+19.5% net)* and October (+7.4% net)* leading to a quarterly net return of +27.8%.*
